Pogostemon deccanensis, the Indian star plant, differs significantly from the common Pogostemon species used in the aquarium hobby. It was initially introduced mistakenly as Rotala verticillaris and later identified as Pogostemon erectus. Although it is still widely known by that name, it is actually the closely related species Pogostemon deccanensis. The stems are densely covered with light green, needle-like narrow leaves and look especially attractive in dense groups in the midground or background. With good lighting, CO2 supplementation, and regular fertilization, this species is not particularly difficult to care for. When grown emersed, very high light levels can produce candle-like flower spikes with a characteristic fragrance.
