It grows in nutrient-rich loamy and sandy soils. Many birds find spray millet especially tasty and readily accept it. The yellow spray millet consists of unthreshed fruit heads, so the seeds remain in their natural husks. Birds must pick the individual seeds from the fruit head, or spray, which provides a relatively natural way of feeding.
