Traou Mad means roughly good things in Breton. It is the name of a biscuit invented by Alexis Le Vilain, a baker from Pont-Aven. A few decades later, in 1950, his daughter Marguerite founded a company in Pont-Aven following the great success of the famous Palet de Pont-Aven. Some production processes were automated, but the famous Galettes de Pont-Aven continue to be made entirely by hand according to traditional recipes. In 1980, art became connected with the biscuits. Pont-Aven, the town of painters, attracts many artists to this picturesque Breton town. Since then, works by Paul Gauguin, including La Ronde des petites Bretonnes (Dancing Breton Girls), have adorned Traou Mad biscuit tins. Today, Traou Mad stands for unique biscuits that have been made by hand with local products for 100 years: the eggs come from free-range hens in Finistre, French wheat is milled in a mill directly in Pont-Aven, and the butter also comes from Brittany.
